From Tools to Agents in Language Education
Artificial intelligence in language education is changing quickly. AI is no longer just a tool that teachers and learners pick up and put down.
It is rapidly becoming an agent that converses, adapts, gives feedback, and acts with increasing independence. Voice-based conversation partners, custom chatbots, multimodal feedback systems, and immersive AI environments are already entering classrooms worldwide.
These developments raise a central question for our field: How can learners and teachers keep their agency, identity, and professional judgment as AI becomes an active partner in learning? ICTE 2027 invites global educators and researchers to explore this question together.
