Writing Strategies (What to do to score higher)
Task 1 Strategy (Academic): 4-paragraph “OVERVIEW FIRST” method
✅ Structure (recommended)
- Introduction (1 sentence): paraphrase the prompt (no numbers).
- Overview (2 sentences): the main trends / key differences (no data).
- Body 1: group and compare the most important features with 2–4 key numbers.
- Body 2: finish remaining features with 2–4 key numbers.
🎯 What examiners want
- Overview is essential (missing overview limits score).
- Comparisons (bigger/smaller, higher/lower, increase/decrease).
- Grouping (don’t list every number).
- Accurate language (units, time, percentages).
Task 1 Checklist (30 seconds before submit):
- Do I have an overview?
- Did I make comparisons (not just descriptions)?
- Did I use 2–6 key numbers only (not too many)?
- Did I avoid opinions and reasons?
Task 2 Strategy: Plan → Position → Paragraph Power
✅ Structure (Band-friendly)
- Introduction: paraphrase + clear position (agree/disagree / discuss / advantages).
- Body 1: main idea → explain → example.
- Body 2: second idea (or other view) → explain → example.
- Conclusion: restate position + 1-sentence summary (no new ideas).
🔥 Paragraph Power formula
- Topic sentence: one clear claim.
- Because: 1–2 reasons (logic).
- Example: real, specific (country, school, workplace, personal but formal).
- Link back: connect to the question.
Task 2 Checklist (45 seconds before submit):
- Is my position clear from the introduction?
- Does each body paragraph have a topic sentence + example?
- Did I use linking words naturally (However, Therefore, As a result)?
- Did I avoid memorised phrases that sound unnatural?
Time Management Plan (simple + effective)
- Task 1 (20 mins): 3 plan → 14 write → 3 check
- Task 2 (40 mins): 5 plan → 30 write → 5 check
- Always check: S-V agreement, articles (a/the), plural -s, punctuation, spelling.
High-impact language moves (safe for Band 6–7+)
- Task 1: “Overall, …” / “In contrast, …” / “A similar pattern is seen in …”
- Task 2: “This is because …” / “A clear example of this is …” / “As a result, …”
- Use a mix of simple + complex sentences (don’t force long ones).
