IELTS Listening Strategies (Quick & Practical)

Open/Close strategies
  1. Read questions first (10–20 seconds)
    • Underline keywords (names, numbers, days, places).
    • Predict the answer type (number? noun? place?).
  2. Follow the order
    • Answers usually appear in the same order as the audio.
  3. Listen for synonyms
    • Audio often paraphrases the question wording.
  4. Write while listening
    • Don’t wait—write quickly, then check spelling.
  5. Watch for corrections
    • Speakers may change details: “Thursday… sorry, Friday”.
  6. Check word limits
    • ONE WORD ONLY / NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS / etc.
