IELTS Speaking Strategies (Quick & Practical)
Open/Close strategies
- Answer + extend
- Give a direct answer first, then add a reason and an example.
- Use: Because… / For example… / In my experience…
- Fluency over perfection
- If you make a small grammar mistake, keep going.
- Pause silently instead of using many fillers (um/uh).
- Use linking words
- However, Although, Therefore, As a result, On the other hand
- Part 2 structure (easy)
- 1) Background (who/what/when) → 2) Details → 3) Feelings/opinion → 4) Ending sentence
- Part 3 discussion
- Give a balanced answer: one side → the other side → your opinion.
- Use general language: In many countries… / Generally speaking…
- Vocabulary
- Prefer natural collocations: healthy lifestyle, pay attention to, public information

The examiner asks about you, your home, work/studies, and familiar topics.
Example topic: Health
Practice Part 1
- Is it important to you to eat healthy food? Why/Why not?
- If you catch a cold, what do you do to help you feel better? Why?
- Do you pay attention to public information about health? Why/Why not?
- What could you do to have a healthier lifestyle?
Part 2
Long Turn (Cue Card)
You speak for 1–2 minutes after 1 minute preparation.
Instructions
Practice Part 2
- You have one minute to think about what you are going to say.
- You can make notes if you wish.
- Speak continuously until the examiner stops you.
Part 3
Discussion
More general, analytical questions related to Part 2 (opinions, reasons, comparisons).
