IELTS Listening Strategies (Quick & Practical)
Open/Close strategies
- Read questions first (10–20 seconds)
- Underline keywords (names, numbers, days, places).
- Predict the answer type (number? noun? place?).
- Follow the order
- Answers usually appear in the same order as the audio.
- Listen for synonyms
- Audio often paraphrases the question wording.
- Write while listening
- Don’t wait—write quickly, then check spelling.
- Watch for corrections
- Speakers may change details: “Thursday… sorry, Friday”.
- Check word limits
- ONE WORD ONLY / NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS / etc.
